FARGO – FM’s Finest takes a full folk turn this week with performances by Dann K & Black Casket (top photo) and Riesage.
FM’s Finest is a weekly concert series at The House of Rock at The Hub sponsored by The Forum and music promoter Jade Presents.
Dann K & Black Casket, which formed in 2010 in Fargo, is a four-person band, but “the number of instruments we use is larger than the number of players we have,” says band founder and lead vocalist Dann Keller.
Those instruments include guitar, piano, organ, trumpet, trombone, cello, accordion, glockenspiel, melodica and more. That combination contributes for a collective sound that Keller says falls under the umbrella of alternative folk.
“I’d describe our sound as melodic and haunting, as well as catchy and, at times, epic,” Keller says.
That diverse instrumentality also brings an element of unpredictability to the band’s live shows, Keller says.
“We are fun to watch because we often change instruments, so you can’t really tell what might come next,” he says.
Last year, Dann K & Black Casket had the opportunity to open for Indiana band Murder by Death at The Aquarium, and Keller says that was a particularly rewarding show for the group.
“There is no cooler feeling playing for a room packed full of musical lovers, and having your original songs be so well received,” he says.
Riesage, meanwhile, also brings a mixed sound of folk, indie-rock and alt-country, says founder and lead singer Mike Barnum.
Barnum played solo around the area under the name Riesage for a number of years, and then reached out to friends about two years ago to create a full band lineup, Barnum says.
The five-person band didn’t waste any time having a memorable experience together – their very first show as the full group, Barnum says, was opening for Josiah Wolf of the California band Why?
When asked what he hopes fans take away from their live performances, Barnum responded, “Something close to immortality.”
