O’Fosho, a three-person Fargo band with funk and dance overtones, takes its turn at the weekly concert series sponsored by The Forum and music promoter Jade Presents. The performance is set for 9 tonight at The House of Rock at The Hub.
O’Fosho’s unique name comes from something the band’s members would often say – short for “oh for sure,” according to lead singer and guitarist Matt Johnson.
“We thought it would make a good name,” Johnson says.
With a sound that Johnson describes as based in roots music and “very blues-funk oriented,” the band takes inspiration from musical artists ranging from Miles Davis to Rage Against the Machine, he says.
“Basically, anyone who plays with raw emotion and soul,” he adds.
In three years of playing together, Johnson thinks the band’s first CD release party at the Aquarium in 2011 and a Trampled by Turtles after-party this November were notable live highlights.
“Both shows had an amazing energy, and the music shined because of it,” Johnson says.
It’s that energy, he says, that really comes to define the band’s live shows, which are filled with lots of improvisation.
“It’s a chance for the band and audience to take a journey together,” he says.
At the end of every O’Fosho concert, Johnson hopes that fans walk away with a feeling of spontaneity.
“The hope is every time you feel refreshed and want to come back for more,” he says.
The band will be releasing its sophomore album in April.
